There is no national conversion table: the Canadian school reviews your child's translated transcripts, places the student in a grade, and decides how many credits the earlier years are worth.
- Who decides: The receiving school makes the decision. In Ontario the principal determines credit equivalency and places the student in consultation with the student, staff and family.
- Years completed: Ontario policy links remaining requirements to completed secondary years. After one year a student still needs 22 credits, after two years 14, after three years 7, and after more than three years 4.
- Marks: Schools translate previous results into local terms. B.C. schools assign a letter grade and percentage to equivalency credits, or record Transfer Standing when a mark cannot be determined.
- Placement: Elementary students are placed by age. Secondary placement depends on age, academic background and, in many districts, English and mathematics assessments.
- What to prepare: Official report cards for at least the last two years, with certified English or French translations. Course descriptions help when subjects have no direct Canadian match.
Please note: The final credit count is confirmed only after the school's own assessment, usually once the student has enrolled.
