The OSSD for International Students

The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is the high school diploma awarded in Ontario, Canada. It is recognised by universities across Canada and around the world. International students can earn it at an Ontario public or private school — here is what it takes.

OSSD requirements at a glance

One credit is earned for successfully completing a course of 110 hours. Schools may recognise some previous studies abroad, which reduces the number of credits an international student still needs.

How long does it take?

Students who start in grade 9 usually complete the OSSD in four years. Students joining in grade 11 often graduate in two years, depending on how many credits the school recognises from their home country. Summer and online courses can help students who join late.

OSSD and university admission

Ontario universities calculate admission averages from the best six grade 12 (4U/4M) courses. Universities elsewhere in Canada and around the world also accept the OSSD. Students who complete grade 12 in Ontario generally apply as domestic-curriculum applicants rather than international-curriculum applicants, which simplifies the process.

Where to study for the OSSD

All Ontario public school boards and Ontario private schools inspected by the Ministry of Education can grant OSSD credits. Compare Ontario schools by fee and program on our Ontario page.
