Exchange or study abroad? How it works in Canada
Families often say “exchange”, but most programs in Canada are one-way: the student joins a Canadian school as an international student for a term or a year, pays tuition and lives in homestay. True reciprocal exchanges between two schools exist but are rare. The one-way model is flexible: you choose the province, the school and the dates.
- One semester (about 5 months, September or February start)
- One full school year (10 months)
- Short programs of 1 to 3 months at some districts
- Homestay with a screened Canadian family
Costs of a semester or year
In public school districts, one semester typically costs about half the annual tuition — often CAD 6,000 to 9,000 — plus homestay, insurance and fees. A full year usually totals CAD 25,000 to 35,000 including homestay.
| School type | Schools listed | From | Typical (median) | Up to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public school districts | 105 | CAD 9,500 | CAD 15,000 | CAD 18,500 |
| Private schools | 30 | CAD 18,400 | CAD 32,025 | CAD 88,059 |
| CAIS independent schools | 30 | CAD 32,750 | CAD 88,660 | CAD 105,200 |
Fees are the published annual fees for international students for 2026–27 where available (boarding schools include room and board). Always confirm with the school.
Do exchange students need a study permit?
A student whose program lasts six months or less can study on visitor status, though some families still apply for a permit. Programs longer than six months require a study permit before travel. Students under 17 need a custodian in Canada, which public districts usually provide.
Credits and returning home
Canadian schools issue a transcript at the end of the term or year. Many schools in Europe, Latin America and Asia recognise these credits; check with your home school before departure which courses to choose so the time abroad counts towards graduation.
