Yes. Canadian schools can recognize earlier secondary studies as equivalent credits, and the receiving school decides how many after reviewing the student's official records.
- Ontario: The principal of the receiving school determines the total credit equivalency of the student's previous learning and records it on the Ontario Student Transcript.
- British Columbia: Schools award equivalency credit under the procedures of their board of education, based on documented proof that the course was completed. There is no limit on the number of credits awarded this way.
- Documents needed: Official transcripts are essential. In B.C. students may need to provide translations if documents are not in English or French.
- Still required: Transfer students must complete the remaining credits and provincial requirements. In Ontario every transfer student must still meet the literacy graduation requirement.
- Timing: The formal assessment is usually done by the school after enrolment, so a credit count given before arrival should be treated as an estimate.
Please note: Equivalency is decided case by case by the school; it cannot be promised in advance.
