There is no national minimum GPA; public districts generally review the last two years of school reports as a whole, while private schools set their own, often more selective, standards.
- Public districts: Most publish no minimum average. Toronto, for example, bases admission on translated transcripts or school reports and a letter of recommendation.
- What is reviewed: Districts look at previous academic performance, English level, age and available space when deciding on admission and grade placement.
- Private schools: Independent and boarding schools may ask for report cards, recommendation letters, an entrance test such as the SSAT and an interview. Each school decides its own threshold.
- Graduation goals: A student who wants to graduate in Canada needs marks and English strong enough to complete the remaining credits in the time available.
- Weaker reports: Lower marks do not automatically prevent admission to a public district, but they can affect the grade and courses offered.
Please note: Any minimum average you see quoted applies to one school only; ask the school directly.
