Usually not for public high schools, which assess English themselves, but some districts ask for a score in the senior grades and many private schools require one.
- Often not required: The Toronto District School Board states that high school applications do not need TOEFL or IELTS scores.
- District assessment: Districts commonly test English after acceptance or on arrival to decide courses and language support. Vancouver charges a CAD 100 English assessment fee as part of the application.
- Senior grades: Some districts set a level for students who plan to graduate. West Vancouver asks Grade 10 applicants for IELTS 4.0 to 4.5 and Grade 11 applicants for IELTS 4.6 to 5.0, or equivalent tests.
- Private schools: CAIS boarding schools may ask applicants whose first language is not English for an English proficiency assessment such as TOEFL or IELTS.
- No study permit test: IRCC's guidance for minor students lists a letter of acceptance, not a language test score.
Please note: Requirements differ by school and grade and can change; check the current application page.
