Sometimes. There is no national rule, so access depends on the district, the grade, the space available and, at secondary level, the student's existing French.
- What immersion means: In Ontario, French Immersion students study French and take two or more other subjects in French. At elementary level at least 50% of instruction is in French, and secondary students accumulate ten credits in French.
- Entry points: Immersion normally begins in the early grades. A student joining in high school is usually expected to have enough French to follow subject classes taught in French.
- District decision: Each district sets its own admission rules and places are limited. Some districts offer immersion to international students and others do not.
- Other routes: Students with little French can take French as a subject in an English school. Students who already study in French can consider a French-language school or a school in Quebec.
- How to check: Use the French language-of-study filter in the CAPS-I school search, then ask the district in writing whether immersion is available for your child's grade.
Please note: No official national list exists of immersion programs open to international students; confirm with each district.
