The school year generally runs from early September to the end of June, and many secondary schools divide it into two semesters, September to January and February to June.
- Year length: Each province and school board sets its own calendar. In Ontario a regular school year typically runs from September 1 to June 30 and must include at least 194 school days.
- Semestered schools: Students take four courses from September to January and four different courses from February to June, earning credits at the end of each semester.
- Full-year schools: Some schools are not semestered. Students take about eight courses from September to June and earn their credits after final assessments in June.
- Breaks: There is a winter break in late December and a one-week spring break, usually in March. In Ontario for 2026-27 these are December 21 to January 1 and March 15 to 19.
- Summer: July and August are the summer holiday. Many districts offer optional summer programs.
Please note: Exact dates differ by province and district; check the calendar published by the school board.
