Canadian provincial diplomas are official government credentials that universities abroad routinely assess for admission, but each university sets its own entry conditions and no diploma is accepted automatically everywhere.
- Government credential: The OSSD, the B.C. Dogwood Diploma and the other provincial diplomas are awarded under the authority of each province's ministry of education.
- University practice: Universities outside Canada publish entry requirements for Canadian diplomas. The University of Manchester, for example, lists requirements for Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan diplomas.
- Grades and subjects: Acceptance depends on Grade 12 courses and marks, not on the diploma alone. Manchester asks OSSD holders for an 80% average in six Grade 12 U/M courses, and some programs require specific subjects.
- Conditions apply: Some universities add conditions. Manchester states that the OSSD must generally be studied in person, with Grades 10 to 12 completed over three academic years.
- Home country recognition: If you plan to return home for university, ask your national education authority how it treats a Canadian provincial diploma before you enrol.
Please note: Recognition is decided by each university or national authority; check the requirements of the institutions you are aiming for.
