Biometrics are required for most applicants aged 14 to 79, while a medical exam is required only in specific situations, mainly depending on where the student has recently lived.
- Biometrics by age: Children under 14 are exempt. Applicants aged 14 to 79 give fingerprints and a photo, usually within 30 days of the instruction letter.
- Biometrics fee: CAD 85 per person, or a maximum of CAD 170 for a family applying at the same time. It is paid with the application.
- Medical exam rule: For a stay longer than six months, an exam is needed if the student lived in or travelled to a designated country or territory for six or more consecutive months in the previous year.
- Panel physician: The exam must be done by a doctor on IRCC's panel list, not the family doctor. Results are valid for 12 months.
- Timing: Book biometrics as soon as the letter arrives, because IRCC does not finish processing until they are received.
Please note: The list of designated countries changes; check it on the IRCC website before applying.
