For applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, IRCC requires a student coming alone to show CAD 23,448 for one year of living costs, in addition to first-year tuition and travel costs.
- Current amount: CAD 23,448 per year for one person outside Quebec. With one accompanying family member the figure is CAD 29,192, and with two it is CAD 35,888.
- Tuition is extra: The living-cost figure does not include tuition or transportation. You must also show you can pay the first year of school fees and the return journey.
- Quebec: Students going to Quebec must meet the amounts set by the Quebec immigration ministry as part of the Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) process, which are published separately.
- Accepted evidence: Examples include a receipt for tuition and housing already paid, six months of bank statements, a Canadian guaranteed investment certificate, an education loan, or a letter and supporting documents from the person paying.
- Parents as sponsors: When parents fund the studies, IRCC expects a letter stating their occupation, relationship and the amount provided, supported by identification and financial records.
Please note: IRCC updates these amounts each year, so confirm the figure in force on the day you apply.
