A typical day runs from about 8:30 in the morning to mid-afternoon, Monday to Friday, with exact times set by each school.
- Semester model: Many secondary schools divide the year into two semesters, and students commonly take four courses each semester. Others run a full-year timetable.
- Credits: Each completed course earns credit toward the provincial diploma. Ontario, for example, requires 30 credits for the OSSD.
- Daily rhythm: Classes are separated by a lunch break. Teams, clubs and extra help usually take place at lunch or after the last class.
- Attendance: Students are expected at every class unless ill or on an approved trip, and programs treat skipping as a breach of the code of conduct.
- Homework: Expect regular assignments, projects and tests through the term, since marks are built up over the whole course.
Please note: Bell times and timetable models are local decisions; the school will send the exact schedule before the start date.
