Canadian high schools offer a wide range of school teams and student clubs, and international students can generally join them.
- School sport: School teams compete through provincial associations. In Ontario, OFSAA brings together 18 regional school athletic associations and runs 46 provincial championships across 22 sports.
- Typical sports: Common options include basketball, volleyball, soccer, track and field, badminton, swimming, cross-country and ice hockey. The list depends on the school and the season.
- Clubs: Schools commonly run student council, debate, robotics, yearbook, environmental and cultural clubs. Lists are published on each school's website.
- Why it matters: Teams and clubs are one of the fastest ways to build friendships and practise English or French outside class.
- Check the details: Ask about tryouts, team fees and any eligibility rules for newly arrived students. Some homestay programs also set rules about joining community teams outside school.
Please note: Offerings vary by school and year; ask the school for its current list.
