Not directly: high school gives no immigration status of its own, and the work and residence options families ask about are tied to post-secondary study and skilled work experience in Canada.
- Post-graduation work permit: It is available only after completing an eligible post-secondary program of at least eight months at a PGWP-eligible institution. Language and, for some programs, field of study requirements apply.
- Express Entry points: Additional points are given for post-secondary credentials earned in Canada, 15 for one or two years and 30 for three years or more. High school in Canada earns no additional points.
- Work experience: The Canadian Experience Class requires one year of skilled work in Canada. Work done while a full-time student does not count.
- Indirect benefits: Strong English or French, a Canadian diploma and familiarity with the system help with university admission and with the language scores used later in immigration programs.
- New permit required: Moving from high school to college or university means applying for a study permit at the post-secondary level, where an attestation letter is usually required.
Please note: Immigration programs change often and no pathway to permanent residence can be guaranteed; check IRCC for current rules.
