Each boarding school sets its own rules, but all use fixed curfews, check-ins and sign-out procedures that become more flexible as students get older.
- No national rule: There is no single Canadian curfew standard. Rules are published in each school's boarding handbook, which you should read before enrolling.
- Evening routine: Weeknights typically include a check-in after classes, supervised study time and a set lights-out time that is later for senior grades.
- One school's example: Branksome Hall in Toronto lists weekend curfews of 9:00 p.m. for grade 9, 10:00 p.m. for grade 10, 11:00 p.m. for grade 11 and midnight for grade 12.
- Leaving campus: Students sign out and tell duty staff where they are going and when they will return. Younger students may need to be accompanied, and longer outings need staff approval.
- Overnight leave: Weekend or overnight stays away from residence normally require advance permission from parents and the boarding staff.
Please note: The example shows one school's published rules; every school's handbook differs.
