Winnipeg School Division

Winnipeg, Manitoba

Winnipeg School Division is the largest public school division in Winnipeg, with 78 schools, 12 of them high schools, and about 33,000 students. It accepts international students in grades 1 to 12.

Need

Why Winnipeg School Division?

Families whose children have not yet chosen a career direction often look for the division with the widest range of programs. Offering academic, health and performing arts options, this division is a natural fit. It describes itself as the largest and most diverse of Winnipeg's six metropolitan school divisions.

  • Families who want choice: those who want IB, AP, vocational and arts programs within one division.
  • Families who want a multicultural setting: students who want to attend a city school where diversity is normal.
  • Families who want to start early: parents planning to move their children into Canadian education from elementary school age.
Reasons

Reasons: the strengths of Winnipeg School Division

  • IB and AP: both are offered from grade 7 through grade 12, so students can begin challenging academic work early.
  • Scale: the division has 78 schools and 12 high schools. Seven of these accept international students, and about 180 international students are spread across this network, which improves the chance of finding a school that matches a student's interests.
  • Career-focused programs: the Medical Professionals Program and Technical Vocational Programming let students explore health and technical fields in high school.
  • Arts and sports: Performing Arts, the Hockey Academy and a sports program let students develop their talents alongside their regular courses.
  • Language options: English and French immersion programs let students develop one or both official languages.
  • In-house homestay care: the division runs accommodation itself, working with carefully vetted host families, and provides airport pickup and orientation for a smooth arrival.
  • Guardianship included: guardianship is part of the program, so no separate arrangement is needed for students under 17.

Result

Outcome: what it means for students and families

  • Easier to find a direction: the wide range of programs lets students test and clarify their interests during high school. Options such as a UNESCO program also appeal to students interested in global issues.
  • Strong academic record: IB or AP courses demonstrate academic preparation in university applications. These courses require heavy reading and writing in English, so language level should be considered in planning.
  • City life: Winnipeg, with a population of about 750,000 (2021 Census), offers big-city amenities with a small-city feel. Within a community of 33,000 students, the 180 international students form a small group.
  • A complete welcome: airport pickup and orientation reduce stress in the first week, so families know their child will not be left unsupported from day one.

Who it suits and what to consider

  • Suitable profile: students who can make their place in a large, diverse school and who are willing to find their direction among many options. Continuous enrolment applies to elementary and short-term programs, and accommodation conditions for younger students should be asked about separately.
  • Costs: the homestay fee is CAD 1,200 per month, above the CAD 1,000 to CAD 1,100 seen at other Winnipeg divisions. The application fee is CAD 350, annual health insurance is CAD 600 and single-term health insurance is CAD 400.
  • Timing and fees: the deadlines for high school credit programs are April 1 and November 1. Families should confirm current fees with the school before applying. For study longer than six months, IRCC issues the Study Permit, so preparation should begin before these deadlines.
