Why Vernon School District?
The district suits families who do not want the bustle of a big city but are looking for a wide range of programs. With about 9,400 students, it is large enough to offer choice and small enough to know its students. International students are placed in one of five high schools. The Okanagan lakes and a nearby ski resort spread life outside school across all four seasons.
- Academic confidence: for students who want to study in a district with a high graduation rate.
- Variety of sports: for those looking for a soccer, hockey, golf, volleyball, ski or dance academy.
- Warmth of home: for parents who want their child to stay with a host family where they are closely looked after.
Reasons: the verified features that make Vernon stand out
Vernon is a city in the Okanagan Valley surrounded by Kalamalka, Okanagan and Swan lakes. Its homestay program offers a home environment on the scale of a small city.
- Graduation rate: the district has one of the highest graduation rates in British Columbia.
- International teachers: every high school has a teacher responsible for international students.
- Sports academies: there are Soccer, Hockey, Golf, Volleyball, Ski and Dance academies.
- Academic and applied courses: AP courses, Robotics, Culinary Arts, Outdoor Education and theatre production are offered.
- ELL: there is an English Language Learning program for students who start with a lower language level.
- Supervised accommodation: criminal record checks, home inspections and interviews are mandatory. The coordinator can be reached 24 hours a day, and regular checks are carried out throughout the year.
- Climate: winters are mild and summers are hot and dry. The Silver Star ski resort is 20 minutes away, so sport is possible in all four seasons.

How this fee compares
At CAD 16,000, this fee equals the median among 35 public school districts in British Columbia.
Outcome: what it means for the student and family
Together, these features help the student progress academically toward graduation while developing in a sport or skill area. Parents know that their child's progress is reported throughout the year.
- Personal matching: students and host families are matched according to their interests.
- Social program: hockey games, bowling, skating, tobogganing and university tours are organized.
- Diverse community: there are 350 international students from more than 20 countries.
- Transport: Kelowna International Airport is 30 minutes away.
Who it suits and what to consider
- Suitable profile: students interested in sports or applied courses who are looking for a family environment in a small city.
- Calendar: places for September usually fill by February 1, and places for January by May 15. Vancouver is about 4.5 hours away by road.
- Cost: full-year tuition is CAD 16,000 and a single semester is CAD 9,000. Additional fees are CAD 250 for the application, CAD 1,200 for health insurance, CAD 550 for placement and guardianship, and CAD 300 for activities. The current fees should be confirmed with the school before applying.
- A Study Permit is required for full-year and semester study. IRCC makes the decision, and a PAL is not required for high school students. The CAD 550 placement and guardianship fee meets the guardian requirement for students under 17. The district admits students on a continuous basis, so short-term participation is possible. Recognition in the student's home country is handled by that country's education authority.
