Need

Why Upper Grand District School Board?

Some families worry about their child being surrounded by a large group of students who speak their own language. Upper Grand offers a setting with few international students and a genuinely English-speaking community, which suits parents who want that environment for high school.

  • Language environment: Communities where more than 95% of residents speak English.
  • Safety: According to the board, Guelph ranks among the ten safest cities in Canada.
  • Access: About one hour's drive from Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Reasons

Reasons: what makes Upper Grand stand out

The board serves Wellington County (Guelph) and Dufferin County (Orangeville) and has run its international program since 2012/2013. It offers full-year and single-semester options, with intakes in September and February. The features that distinguish it are:

  • Few international students: Roughly 80 international students among about 35,000 students, so students mix with Canadian peers and develop their language quickly.
  • IB and AP: International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement courses give academically driven students challenging work even in a small city.
  • Hockey and arts: A hockey academy, sports options including dance, and a fine arts program support development outside the classroom.
  • Specialist High Skills Major: Students can complete their diploma with courses focused on a specific industry sector.
  • French Immersion and ESL: Students can progress in both French and English, with ESL support available.
  • Mandatory homestay: Every student must live with a family, even after turning 18, so daily supervision is continuous.
  • Choice of accommodation: Families can select the host family themselves or work with a placement provider, so housing plans are flexible.

Result

Outcome: what it means for the student and family

Taken together, these features let students take part in Canadian community life as insiders rather than as outside visitors. For parents, the arrangement is simple, easy to follow and safe. Guelph is also cited in the board's promotional materials for its place in smart-community rankings. A Study Permit is required for study longer than six months. High school study is exempt from the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), and IRCC makes the visa decision.

  • Real integration: Students must speak English at school and at home, which naturally builds language practice.
  • Safe daily life: Guelph has about 122,000 residents, with short distances and a calm environment.
  • Academic options: IB or AP strengthens a university application file.
  • Constant supervision: The requirement to live with a family gives parents peace of mind from afar.

Who it suits and what to consider

  • Cost: Annual tuition is CAD 16,000. The CAD 800 application fee is non-refundable and consists of a CAD 300 application charge and a CAD 500 placement fee. Annual health insurance costs CAD 650. Families should confirm current fees with the school before applying.
  • Application timeline: The deadline for a September start is May 1, and for a February start it is November 1.
  • Grades and environment: The program covers only grades 9 to 12. The region has four distinct seasons, and students looking for big-city activity may find daily life quiet.
