Why Upper Canada District School Board?
Sending a student whose English is not yet sufficient to the crowded schools of a big city makes many parents hesitate. Upper Canada is a suitable option for families who prefer calm small towns where language support is provided in an organized way.
- Language first: Suited to students who want to strengthen their English before moving on to academic courses.
- Calm surroundings: The board covers an area of 12,000 square kilometres made up of rural and small-city communities.
- A chance to try: Short-term programs of 4 to 12 weeks offer an option for families who want to get to know Canada first.
Reasons: what makes Upper Canada stand out
The board's area has 21 high schools and 65 elementary schools. Its southern boundary is the St. Lawrence River. International students are placed in high schools designated for English support. Full-year, single-semester, short-term, winter camp and teacher training options are offered.
- Enhanced ESL: Ten high schools have a full-time ESL teacher, and ESL credit courses are offered every semester. Students therefore do not lose credits while learning the language.
- Graduated program: Options range from full-time English development to the academic credit program. Students at every level can start at the right point.
- Hockey Academy: Students interested in sport can practise hockey, Canada's iconic sport, within the school program.
- Location: Cornwall is an hour's drive from both Montreal and the capital, Ottawa. Students can reach both big cities easily.
- Accommodation standard: The board works with Canada Homestay International. Students are provided with a private room, a study area, internet, meals and transportation.
- Custodianship: Homestay coordinators act as custodians for students under 18. The family does not need to look for a custodian separately.
- Experience: The program has been running since 1999 and has hosted about 400 international students. Its processes are therefore well established.

Outcome: what it means for the student and family
This structure offers a safe start for students coming to Canada for the first time who need to improve their English quickly. For parents, language, accommodation and custodianship are handled within an orderly framework. French and French Immersion options are also available. The school year begins in September and ends in June. Recognition of the diploma in the student's home country is handled by that country's education authority.
- Solid language foundation: The student uses English constantly, in class and in daily life within a small community.
- Personal attention: In schools in small communities the student is more easily known and followed.
- Single point of support: Because accommodation and custodianship run within the same structure, parents deal with a single contact.
- Flexible duration: Because short-term programs accept students throughout the year, the calendar can be adapted to the family.
Who it suits and what to consider
- Cost: Full-year tuition is CAD 15,800 and single-semester tuition is CAD 8,100. Airport transfer is CAD 250 each way. The homestay fee varies by provider. The current fee should be confirmed with the school before applying.
- Location and climate: The region does not offer big-city life. The nearest airports are in Ottawa and Montreal. Students need to be prepared for winter conditions in Eastern Ontario.
- Calendar: Entry to full programs is in September and at the beginning of February. For study longer than six months, the time needed for the Study Permit must be taken into account.
