Why Sunshine Coast School District?
Families who want their child to complete high school largely inside a Canadian school community, rather than within a large international group, consider this district. It has twelve schools, and the nearest airport is Vancouver International Airport, so students live close to nature while keeping access to a major city.
- Immersive language environment: for students who want to attend a school with very few international students.
- Proximity to Vancouver: for families who want a natural, calm setting without being far from the city.
- Individual attention: for students who want a learning pace shaped around them.
Reasons: Sunshine Coast's verified features
The district's three main communities are Gibsons, Sechelt and Pender Harbour. Its high schools are Elphinstone Secondary, Chatelech Secondary and Pender Harbour Secondary, and international students are accepted at two of them.
- Very small international group: only 24 of the district's 3,300 students are international, so students mainly build friendships with Canadians.
- Personalized learning: academic programs focus on personalized learning with intensive use of technology, so each student's pace is taken into account.
- Outdoor Education and Leadership: because the district stretches between the mountains and the ocean, canoeing, sea kayaking, hiking and mountain biking are part of the course.
- Fine arts: Band, Choir, painting and drama classes give artistically inclined students a place to express themselves.
- Applied skills: courses in TV and video production, textiles, culinary arts and woodworking are offered, with apprenticeship-level courses run in partnership with Vancouver Island University, so career interests can be tested early.
- Host families: host families are English-speaking and carefully selected through interviews, so home life extends language practice naturally.
- Bundled accommodation fee: the CAD 14,280 fee covers placement, guardianship and airport transfer, which reduces extra costs.

How this fee compares
At CAD 15,151, this fee is CAD 849 below the median of CAD 16,000 among 35 public school districts in British Columbia.
Outcome: deeper language skills and confidence in a calm setting
The natural result is that students quickly become part of the local community and use English throughout the day. A safe, open environment eases parents' concerns.
- Quick adjustment: the small group helps students blend into the school community.
- Sports: volleyball, basketball, rugby, ultimate, athletics and mountain biking teams are available. The ski team competes at Whistler Blackcomb.
- Regular trips: Vancouver museums, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Cypress Mountain and boat tours are part of the program.
- Flexible duration: full-year, single-semester and short-term options are offered.
Who it suits and what to consider
- Suitable profile: mature students in grades 10 to 12 who can act independently and follow classes in English.
- Age and location: the program does not accept students in grade 9 or below. The communities are small, so a student who wants city life may find the setting quiet.
- Cost: full-year tuition is CAD 15,151 and one semester is CAD 8,270. The application fee is CAD 250, and health insurance of CAD 900 is paid separately. The current fee should be confirmed with the school before applying.
- A Study Permit is required for stays longer than six months. IRCC makes that decision, and high school students are exempt from the PAL. Because the accommodation fee covers guardianship, no separate guardianship arrangement is needed for students under 17. The CAPS-I page gives no final application deadline, so the schedule should be confirmed with the district. Recognition in the student's home country is handled by that country's education authority.
