Why Sudbury Catholic District School Board?
Families looking for a Canadian experience in a small, attentive school system set among lakes and forests look at Sudbury. The board has about 6,200 students and aims to offer international students a safe, inclusive environment. The board states that it provides quality education in line with Ontario secondary school requirements and that it values equity and inclusion.
- A passion for hockey: Student athletes who want to continue hockey within the school program.
- A small system: Families who want a school board where the student is known closely. The board has 18 schools in total.
- Advanced courses: Those who want to take Advanced Placement courses in a small city.
Reasons: small scale, sports programs and insurance-inclusive tuition
- Hockey Canada Program and BEST: Because hockey and other sports programs run at school, student athletes can keep training in step with class hours.
- Advanced Placement and Reach Ahead: Through these programs academically strong students can take courses ahead of their age group. Workplace experience can also be gained through Cooperative Education.
- Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM): Specialization is available in health, information technology, business, manufacturing, transportation and sports, adding a sector focus to the diploma.
- French Immersion: Through the intensive French program students can develop their French alongside their English. Arts and drama courses are also offered.
- Insurance-inclusive tuition: Health insurance is included in the CAD 15,500 tuition; the family does not pay this cost separately.
- Four high schools and a small system: Because international students are accepted at four high schools and the board consists of 18 schools, the risk of getting lost in the crowd is low.
- Nature and activities: The city has more than 330 lakes and over 200 km of trails. Activities such as alpine and Nordic skiing, swimming, curling, and robotics and photography clubs keep students active. There are also soccer, basketball, volleyball, golf and track and field teams.

Outcome: a student who combines sport, study and nature
- Balanced program: Student athletes can pursue their academic goals without interrupting training. Enrolment takes place in September and February; students can study for a full year or a single semester and attend the same classes as their Canadian peers.
- Academic footing: The board states that its high schools score above average in provincial literacy and mathematics assessments.
- Fees: The annual fee is CAD 15,500 and the single-semester fee is CAD 7,750, with insurance included. The single-semester program lasts five months. A short-term introductory program and a summer camp are also available.

Who it suits and what to consider
- Climate and location: Sudbury is in Northern Ontario; winters are long, cold and snowy. The city has its own airport, but international arrivals reach it by connecting flight.
- Additional costs: There is a CAD 250 application fee and a CAD 200 airport transfer fee. Accommodation and custodianship costs should be obtained from the provider. Prices may change, so the current fee should be confirmed with the school before applying.
- Identity and calendar: The board is a Catholic school system. The application deadline is May 31 for the September term and November 15 for the February term. The program was established in 2015. A Study Permit is required for programs longer than six months; the visa decision is made by IRCC. High school study is exempt from the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) requirement.
