Victoria, British Columbia

Sooke School District is at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. At its three high schools around Victoria it offers about 250 international students AP, dual credit and seven sports academies. The district has run its program since 1989.

Need

Why Sooke School District?

Families who want their child to progress in a particular sport or vocational field, and to do so in a mild-climate capital city, consider Sooke. Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and lies at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. Because activities such as golf, whale watching, horse riding, cycling, diving, surfing and canoeing are possible all year round, the area suits active students.

  • Sports focus: Students who want to develop in soccer, hockey, golf, baseball, lacrosse, dance or horse riding.
  • English environment: Young people who want to study in the same classes as native English-speaking students.
  • Safe accommodation: Parents who value a homestay program supervised directly by the district.
Reasons

Reasons: the facts that make Sooke fit these needs

The district serves the communities of Colwood, Langford, Highlands, Bear Mountain and Sooke and is growing rapidly. International students are placed in three high schools.

  • Sports academies: Soccer, Dance, Ice Hockey, Golf, Baseball, Lacrosse and Equine academies let students train in their discipline during the school day.
  • AP and Dual Credit: Advanced and dual-credit courses are offered, so students with academic goals can prepare for university.
  • Applied fields: Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Outdoor Education and Sustainability programs offer options for different interests.
  • Low ESL rate: Fewer than one percent of students need ESL support, so international students study in a mostly English-speaking environment.
  • Multilingual team: Staff can provide support in German, French, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish.
  • Supervised accommodation: Host families are selected through an interview, a home inspection, a criminal record check and reference letters, and new families receive orientation training.
  • Climate: The area is one of the driest and sunniest places on the west coast. The daytime average is 7 degrees in December and 22 degrees in July.

Result

Outcome: a student who develops a talent while progressing towards the diploma

Students continue their development in a sport or vocational field on the same timetable as their high school diploma. The district's supervision of accommodation gives parents confidence.

  • Comprehensive program fee: The CAD 1,000 program fee covers bus transport, placement and support, airport transport, custodianship, activities and health coverage.
  • Rich course list: Courses include business, computer science and fine arts, as well as French, Spanish and Japanese.
  • Trips: Trips include skiing at Whistler and Mt. Washington and visits to Vancouver, Seattle and Tofino.
  • Regular communication: The team stays in regular contact with students and families.

Who it suits and what to consider

  • Suitable profile: Students interested in a particular sport or vocational field who have adequate basic English.
  • Calendar: Applications are accepted continuously. The preferred deadline is 31 March for September entry and 15 October for February entry. The quarter option is limited and offered only for February entry.
  • Cost: Tuition is CAD 16,250. The application fee is CAD 300. New student orientation costs CAD 400 in September and CAD 235 in February. Current fees should be confirmed with the school before applying.

Practical notes

A study permit is required for full-year or semester study, and the assessment belongs to IRCC. The PAL is not required at high school level. Because the program fee covers custodianship, the custodianship document for students under 17 is arranged by the district. On return, recognition of the year is applied for through the education authority of the student's home country.
