Rocky Mountain School Districts

Kimberley, British Columbia

Rocky Mountain School Districts serve more than 150 international students at 13 high schools in the mountain towns of British Columbia, offering Hockey and Outdoor Education academies, skiing and host family support.

Need

Why Rocky Mountain School Districts?

Families who want their child to grow up with skiing, mountain biking and hiking, and to spend a high school year away from screens, choose this region. The program has run for more than 30 years. Students are placed in one of 13 high schools, each with its own character. Students under 17 are accepted only when accompanied by a parent or a competent relative, or with special permission.

  • Mountain life: Students who want to make winter sports part of daily life.
  • Small-town safety: Parents looking for communities where students walk to school and everyone knows each other.
  • Early start: Families thinking of starting school in Canada from Grade 7.

Result

Outcome: student life close to nature, with regular follow-up

Students spend most of the day being active and with Canadian peers. Parents know their child is being followed up every week.

  • Independence: Outdoor activities build self-confidence and a sense of responsibility.
  • Language environment: The main language of instruction is English, with French Immersion offered in Golden from grade 4 to grade 12, and town life offers the chance to practise.
  • Regular monitoring: Weekly coordinator meetings give parents a regular flow of information.
  • Choice of duration: Full-year, single-semester and short-term participation are possible.

Who it suits and what to consider

  • Suitable profile: Students who love the outdoors and are keen on winter conditions.
  • Location and climate: The towns are small and mountainous. Travel is via Canadian Rockies, Kelowna or Calgary airports. Not suitable for students looking for city life.
  • Cost: Tuition is CAD 15,500. The CAD 500 application fee, CAD 500 placement fee and CAD 1,000 for health insurance are paid separately. Application dates vary; current fees should be confirmed with the school before applying.

Practical notes

A study permit is required for full-year or semester participation. IRCC makes the decision, and high school study is exempt from the PAL. A custodian must be appointed for students under 17 who come without a parent; this arrangement is clarified with the district at the application stage. The school year runs from September to June, and recognition in the student's home country is handled by that country's education authority.
