Why Prairie Rose Public Schools?
Some families want their children to get to know Canada through rural life rather than its big cities. Prairie Rose serves small prairie communities and has only 6 international students, so it offers that experience in its purest form. The division borders Saskatchewan and the United States, and its communities, set in prairie and parkland landscapes, experience all four seasons.
- Those seeking authentic Canadian rural life: students who want to attend school in small, close-knit communities.
- Those with a passion for hockey or flying: young people looking for academy-level programs in these fields.
- Those interested in horses and agriculture: students who want riding or agriculture-focused courses as part of their high school program.
Reasons: what makes Prairie Rose distinctive
- Very small international group: there are only 6 international students among 3,300 students, so the student body is almost entirely Canadian.
- South Alberta Hockey Academy: a hockey academy in the region lets athletes train alongside their schooling.
- DR Flight Academy: a flight academy lets students interested in aviation explore the field during high school.
- Local focus areas: the division focuses on riding, agriculture, sports and fine arts, so students can take courses that are not offered in city schools.
- The division's own homestay unit: homestay placements are arranged directly by the Prairie Rose international department, giving families a single point of contact.
- No guardianship fee: no guardianship fee is charged, so for students under 17 this requirement adds no extra cost.
- School options: of the 39 schools, 8 are high schools that accept international students, so placement can match a student's interests.

How this fee compares
At CAD 11,000, this fee is CAD 1,100 below the median of CAD 12,100 among 17 public school districts in Alberta.
Outcome: what it means for the student and family
- Deep cultural integration: students quickly become known in a small town and become part of school and community life. Neighbours, teachers and teammates all knowing one another gives reassurance to a young person going abroad for the first time.
- Intensive English: with no one around who speaks the student's own language, language development speeds up naturally. A French Immersion option lets interested students add French.
- A distinctive profile: experience in hockey, flying, riding or agriculture makes a student's file stand out and provides concrete stories for university application essays.
- Predictable budget: tuition of CAD 11,000, monthly homestay of CAD 1,100 and annual health insurance of CAD 600 are known in advance. Single-semester tuition is CAD 5,500.
Who it suits and what to consider
- Suitable profile: independent, adaptable students who are curious about rural life. It is not suited to those expecting shopping malls or urban activity. Describing hobbies and expectations clearly on the application form helps place the student in the right community.
- New program: the international program was founded in 2022. The division is made up of small communities with four seasons, and the nearest airport is in Medicine Hat. Intakes are in August-September and January-February. Full-year, single-semester and short-term options are available.
- Calendar and fees: apply at least three months before the start date. A CAD 250 application fee, a CAD 500 placement fee and a CAD 400 airport transfer fee apply. The current fees should be confirmed with the school. For study longer than six months, IRCC must issue a Study Permit, so allow additional time for visa processing beyond the three-month window.
