Need

Why Powell River (qathet) School District?

Families who want their child to use English in daily life, not only in class, look at Powell River. More than forty years of experience answers parents' question about trust. The district deliberately limits international enrolment and classes are small, so students can reach both their teacher and their Canadian classmates more easily.

  • Full language environment: Students who want to live in a community where English is the only everyday language.
  • Trades and arts: Young people who want to try film, music or culinary arts seriously during high school.
  • Experienced program: Parents looking for a district that has hosted international students for a long time.
Reasons

Reasons: the facts that make Powell River different

Powell River is known as the scuba diving capital of Canada and is a coastal town surrounded by ocean, mountains, lakes and rainforest. Two of the district's nine schools accept international high school students.

  • Since 1985: The program was founded in 1985, so its placement and follow-up processes are well established.
  • Limited international enrolment: 62 of the 3,300 students are international, so students are drawn towards making Canadian friends.
  • English-speaking families: All host families are English-speaking Canadian families, so language practice continues at home.
  • University credit: There is an option that combines high school graduation with university credits in a single program, as well as university preparation courses, so students can take an early step into higher education.
  • Applied programs: Culinary Arts with professional chef training, the Powell River Film School and an on-campus career and technical education facility let students learn their skills by doing.
  • Music and hockey: The Powell River Academy of Music and a Hockey Academy are offered, so an area of talent progresses alongside the academic program.
  • Climate: Summers are warm and winters mild, making adjustment easier for families who might struggle with a Canadian winter.

Result

Outcome: a student who learns the language by living it and discovers their skills

Together, these features give students the chance to acquire the language in everyday life and to try a trade or an art seriously during high school.

  • Diploma: Students can earn the British Columbia Graduation Diploma.
  • Home arrangements: A private bedroom, a desk, internet, three meals a day and snacks are provided.
  • Wealth of activities: The wide activity list includes sea kayaking, sailing, chess, choir, mountain biking and whale watching.
  • Flexible participation: Full-year, single-semester, short-term program and summer camp options are available.

Who it suits and what to consider

  • Suitable profile: Students who love nature and are keen to live in a small, quiet coastal town.
  • Location: A small settlement surrounded by ocean, mountains and rainforest. It may feel limiting for students looking for a big-city pace.
  • Cost: Tuition is CAD 16,500. A CAD 400 application fee, a CAD 500 placement fee, CAD 1,150 for health insurance and a CAD 500 custodianship fee are paid separately. Current fees should be confirmed with the school before applying.

Practical notes

Intakes are in September and February. No fixed application deadline is stated, but acting early is recommended because of the study permit process. IRCC makes the permit decision, and high school students are exempt from the PAL. The annual custodianship fee of CAD 500 meets the custodian requirement for students under 17. On return, recognition is arranged by the education authority of the student's home country.
