Why Peace River North School District?
Families who want the British Columbia curriculum but find costs around Vancouver high consider this northern district. Its small-community structure turns the number of students per teacher into an advantage. The district states that, with 22 schools and modern facilities, it offers a world-class academic program. International students are admitted to two of these schools.
- Affordable budget: Parents looking for lower tuition and accommodation costs within the province.
- Science and technology: Students who want to prepare for university with STEM or AP courses.
- Few international students: Families who want a school where Canadian students are the majority.
Reasons: Peace River North's concrete advantages
Fort St John was founded as a trading post in 1794. Today it relies on oil, natural gas, forestry and agriculture and, with its surrounding area, serves about 60,000 people. The district's international program has run in this community since 2004.
- Certified teachers: Classes are taught by teachers certified by the Government of British Columbia, so education follows provincial standards.
- Teacher-student ratio: Because the community and its institutions are small, the number of students per staff member is favourable and students are more visible in class.
- Advanced Placement and STEM: Students aiming for engineering and the sciences can take advanced courses through these programs.
- Fine Arts: Theatre productions, art exhibitions and competitions are organised, giving artistically inclined students stage and exhibition experience.
- District-run accommodation: The district runs the homestay program itself, so families are carefully selected and monitored throughout the year.
- Low international ratio: 60 of the 6,000 students are international, so the classroom environment is largely Canadian.
- Cost: Full-year tuition is CAD 13,500 and homestay is CAD 1,000 per month. The total budget is lighter than in the province's southern districts. Current fees should be confirmed with the school before applying.

Outcome: a focused, uncomplicated high school year
This structure means a high school year in which the student does not get lost in the crowd and teachers know them well. For families, the costs are clear item by item.
- Academic preparation: The program aims to prepare graduates for college, university and careers.
- Social life: Clubs, teams, day trips, ski trips, concerts and festivals fill the year.
- Variety of sports: Options include martial arts, dance, mountain biking, tennis, golf, swimming, baseball and volleyball.
- Flexible duration: Full-year, single-semester and short-term participation are possible.
Who it suits and what to consider
- Suitable profile: Students who want to study without distraction and can adapt to small-city life.
- Location: Fort St John is a northern city with a population of more than 19,000. Travel is via Fort St John Airport, and big-city amenities are limited.
- Calendar and additional costs: Application deadlines are 15 June and 15 November. The application fee is CAD 200, placement CAD 300, health insurance CAD 1,000, custodianship CAD 500 and the activity fee CAD 500; these are paid separately.
Practical notes
A study permit is mandatory when the period of study exceeds six months, and only IRCC makes that decision. The Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) is not required at high school level. The annual custodianship fee of CAD 500 meets the custodian requirement for students under 17 who come without a parent. The school year starts in September and ends in June. On return, recognition is applied for through the education authority of the student's home country.
