Need

Why North Vancouver School District?

The district is often recommended to families looking for strong academic results, proximity to Vancouver and a setting close to nature. Students who want both university preparation and a high-level sports or arts program can find the two together here.

  • Academically ambitious students: Those who want to prepare for university through AP or IB.
  • Versatile young people: Those who want to pursue sport, dance or digital media at academy level.
  • Families seeking city and nature: Those looking for a life near Vancouver, between the mountains and the sea.
Reasons

Reasons: concrete features that set North Vancouver apart

About 150,000 people live in North Vancouver, and 19,000 students study in 32 schools. The district looks out over the skyline of downtown Vancouver.

  • High graduation rate: The district has a 99% graduation rate, so students study in a setting where completing the diploma is the norm.
  • AP and IB: Both programs are offered, giving students a choice of two strong routes for university preparation.
  • Wide range of academies: Hockey, soccer, basketball, field hockey, dance, volleyball, rowing and digital media academies make areas of talent part of the timetable.
  • Proximity to Vancouver: Downtown Vancouver is 15 minutes away by public transit.
  • Natural surroundings: About 10% of the district is parkland and the local ski mountains are 30 minutes away, so sport and nature are part of daily life.
  • Language-focused host families: Each family hosts at most two international students, and no one else in the home speaks the student's native language, so English practice is uninterrupted.
  • Flexible durations: Options are a five-month semester, a ten-month year or a fifteen-month year and a half, so families choose the length that suits their needs.

Result

Outcome: what it means for the student and family

Taking the academic level, the academies and the location together, ambitious students can expect a full high school experience. A study permit is required for study longer than six months, and only IRCC makes the visa decision.

  • Strong application file: AP or IB courses combined with academy experience help a student stand out in university applications.
  • Custodianship arranged: The host family also acts as custodian, and the student is given a private room, three meals a day and snacks.
  • Balanced lifestyle: Students have easy access to the city on weekdays and to the mountains and trails at weekends.
  • Established program: The international program, founded in 1996, now serves about 640 students.

Who it suits and what to consider

  • Suitable profile: Academically ambitious students who also want to progress in sport or the arts and are ready for city life.
  • Cost: Tuition is CAD 17,000, plus a CAD 300 application fee, CAD 1,200 for health insurance and a CAD 175 airport pickup fee. Accommodation, placement and custodianship fees vary by provider; current fees should be confirmed with the school before applying.
  • Calendar: Applications close on 15 November and 15 May, with intakes in September and January/February. Early planning is advised for academy programs.
