  • The district's own homestay program: The homestay program is run by the district and students are carefully matched with families, so placement is controlled.
  • Weekly monitoring: Coordinators check on students every week, so problems are noticed early.
  • Flexible duration: With options of one semester, one year or study through to the BC diploma, families can extend their plan over time.
  • Six high schools: Six high schools accept international students, so placement can follow program and location preferences.
  • Wide activity program: Curling, bowling, snowshoeing, skating and canoeing are organised, along with trips to Victoria, Vancouver, Whistler, the Yukon and the Rocky Mountains.

Result

Outcome: what it means for the student and family

Long experience combined with in-district homestay management makes it easier for students to adapt to island life. High school study is exempt from the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL); IRCC makes the study permit decision. Students under 17 who travel without a parent need a custodian in Canada; recognition in the student's home country is handled by that country's education authority.

  • Preparation matched to the goal: AP science courses or an arts academy give concrete shape to the student's university direction.
  • Safe home environment: Weekly monitoring and in-district homestay management give parents a regular flow of information.
  • Easy travel: The flight from Vancouver to Nanaimo Airport takes 22 minutes, and airport transport is included in the homestay package.
  • Language support: The homestay program includes supporting the student's English development at home as well.
