Mountain View School Division

Dauphin, Manitoba

Mountain View School Division is a public school division based in Dauphin, 320 km northwest of Winnipeg, offering high school education in seven communities of the Parkland Region.

Need

Why Mountain View School Division?

Parents who want their child to study away from the distractions of city life, close to nature and in a family setting, usually turn to small communities. Mountain View answers this need. The division's 16 schools have 3,170 students in total; the international program has been running since 2006 and the head office is in Dauphin.

  • Those seeking calm and safety: students who want to study in small communities where people know one another.
  • Nature lovers: those who want to live in the scenic Parkland Region.
  • Families who want to avoid extra fees: parents who do not want to pay separately for placement and guardianship.
Reasons

Reasons: what makes Mountain View fit this need

  • Seven communities: the division covers Dauphin, Roblin, Winnipegosis, Grandview, Gilbert Plains, Ethelbert and Ochre River. Students are placed in a small community.
  • Four high schools: 4 of the 16 schools are high schools that accept international students. Only 40 to 50 of the 3,170 students are international, so the environment is predominantly Canadian.
  • Homestay accommodation: students are given their own room, internet access and three meals a day.
  • Two homestay managers: placements are followed by two homestay managers, so it is clear whom to contact if a problem arises.
  • Items with no charge: no fee is charged for placement or guardianship. Families are asked only for the CAD 900 monthly accommodation fee.
  • Program variety: French Immersion, Advanced Placement, vocational programs, sports and fine arts are offered. The small school scale does not limit the options.
  • Established program: the international program was founded in 2006, so the division has a long history in this field.

Result

Outcome: what it means for the student and family

  • Quick adjustment: in a small community the student becomes known quickly and genuinely takes part in school and family life. Teachers, neighbours and teammates know the student by name.
  • Intensive language practice: the small number of international students means English is the only language of daily life. French-language education and the French Immersion option also open the door to a second language for students who want it.
  • Simple cost structure: tuition is CAD 12,500 (full year), accommodation is CAD 900 per month and ten-month health insurance is CAD 600. Five-month health insurance is CAD 300 and single-semester tuition is CAD 6,250.
  • Focused study: the calm surroundings make it easier for students to concentrate on their courses and school activities. Vocational programs offer a different route for students interested in hands-on fields.

Who it suits and what to consider

  • Suitable profile: students who love nature, are open to small-town life and value a family environment. It is not suitable for those looking for big-city amenities. How willing the student is to spend time with the host family determines how much they gain from the setting.
  • Distance: Dauphin is 320 km from Winnipeg. The nearest airport is in Winnipeg, and arrival and departure should be planned accordingly. The fact that no guardianship fee is charged for students under 17 makes things easier for families.
  • Timeline and fees: the application deadline is May 1 for the September intake and November 1 for the February intake. The application fee is CAD 300 and is non-refundable. Current fees should be confirmed with the school. Study longer than six months requires a Study Permit, which is decided by IRCC, so preparation should begin before the deadlines.
