Livingstone Range School Division

Fort Macleod, Alberta

Livingstone Range School Division is in southwestern Alberta, about one hour south of Calgary. It serves students who want a high school experience surrounded by nature, with aviation and ski academies.

Need

Why Livingstone Range School Division?

A standard high school program may not be enough for students who are serious about flying or skiing. The division builds both fields into its high school education, which attracts families with those specific interests. It states that it tailors its international program to each student's individual needs. The division has 3,600 students across 14 schools.

  • Students who dream of aviation: those who want to explore flight training during their high school years.
  • Mountain and outdoor sports enthusiasts: young people who want to ski seriously near the Canadian Rockies.
  • Families who want a short trial: those who would like to start with a four-month program before committing to a full year.
Reasons

Reasons: what sets Livingstone Range apart

  • Flight Academy: students with an interest in aviation can experience it alongside their high school program.
  • Ski Academy: because the division sits where the foothills meet the Canadian Rockies, its ski academy has a natural advantage.
  • Individualized programming: courses and school placement are arranged around each student's needs rather than fitted into a fixed package.
  • Small international group: about 50 of the 3,600 students are international, spread across six high schools, which keeps the use of English high.
  • Careful family selection: host families undergo a police check and an interview with the coordinator, and receive cultural orientation before the student arrives.
  • Flexible duration: options include a full year, a single semester and a four-month program running from September to December, so families can manage risk in small steps.
  • Fee level: full-year tuition is CAD 13,000 and homestay costs CAD 900 per month, keeping the overall budget reasonable.

Result

Outcome: what it means for the student and family

  • An interest can become a career path: an aviation or ski academy gives students an early and realistic view of a field they may pursue later.
  • A safer home environment: vetted host families let parents feel more at ease about daily life. Because host families receive cultural orientation before the student arrives, they are better prepared for different habits.
  • Life surrounded by nature: the region includes Waterton Lakes National Park, offering a year full of outdoor activities. Calgary International Airport is about one hour away.
  • Intensive English: classes consist mostly of Canadian students, which speeds up language development. The fact that the roughly 50 international students are spread across six high schools strengthens this effect.

Who it suits and what to consider

  • Suitable profile: independent students who enjoy the outdoors and are ready to live in small communities. It is not a fit for those who want city life. The region also includes First Nations communities, giving students a chance to learn about Canada's Indigenous cultures at first hand.
  • Calendar: the application deadline is May 1 for September entry and November 30 for February entry. Plan early, since the Study Permit takes time. Programs longer than six months require a Study Permit, which IRCC decides on. Visa requirements for the four-month program should be checked separately.
  • Additional costs: a CAD 200 application fee, a CAD 300 annual placement fee and CAD 550 for health insurance. Academy costs and current fees should be confirmed with the school.
