Lakehead District School Board

Thunder Bay, Ontario

The Lakehead District School Board is the largest public school board in northwestern Ontario. Its three high schools in Thunder Bay offer IB, AP, Aviation Technology, and hockey and volleyball academies.

Need

Why Lakehead District School Board?

Families who take sport seriously, especially ice hockey, or who want a high school life close to nature often choose Thunder Bay. The board runs 27 schools on the Lake Superior shore in boreal forest, serving more than 8,800 students. It sits on the Canadian Shield and accepts international students from junior kindergarten through Grade 12.

  • Student-athletes: Students who want to combine hockey or volleyball with an academic program.
  • Small classes: Students who want more individual attention than in crowded schools. The board highlights its small class sizes.
  • Nature: Young people who enjoy lakes, forests and outdoor activities.
Reasons

Reasons: sports academies, small classes and nature

  • Hockey and Volleyball Academies: These run inside the regular school program, so athletes can train without giving up class time.
  • IB and AP: Both are offered, so a small city still allows an academically ambitious path. French Immersion and e-learning courses are also available.
  • Aviation Technology: Students interested in aviation can learn the trade through hands-on work.
  • Outdoor education: The board operates the Kingfisher Lake Outdoor Education Centre, so students experience outdoor learning as part of school.
  • Applied pathways: Specialist High Skills Majors, Co-operative Education and dual-credit courses with colleges give students work and college experience. The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship program also opens an apprenticeship route.
  • Three schools and small classes: International students are admitted to all three high schools, and small classes let teachers follow each student closely. Visual arts and general sports programs also run in these schools.
  • In-city airport: Thunder Bay International Airport is in the city, and the transfer fee is CAD 189, which makes arrival easy.

Result

Outcome: a student who balances sport and study while growing up in nature

  • Balanced growth: Student-athletes keep up their academic record while maintaining their training schedule.
  • Close attention: A small community of about 50 international students pushes students toward local friendships. Teachers know each student well, so adjustment problems are noticed early. Intakes are in September and February.
  • Reasonable cost: Annual tuition is CAD 14,280, and a single semester costs CAD 7,140. Full-year, single-semester and short-term options exist.
  • Flexible diploma: IB, AP or applied programs keep university and college options open. Recognition in the student's home country is handled by that country's education authority.

Who it suits and what to consider

  • Climate and distance: Thunder Bay has long, harsh winters, and reaching large cities such as Toronto means a flight. International travel involves connecting flights. It may not suit students who dislike nature or winter sports.
  • Costs: The application fee is CAD 300. Homestay costs are confirmed directly with MLI Homestay or Harmony Homestay. Current fees should be confirmed with the school before applying.
  • Timeline: The deadline for September entry is June 1, and for February entry, December 1. A Study Permit is required for programs longer than six months and is decided by IRCC. High school study is exempt from the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). Students under 17 who arrive without a parent must have a guardian appointed in Canada.
