Why Horizon School Division?
Some parents want their child to study alongside Canadian peers rather than in a classroom with many students from their own country or other international students. Horizon meets this need, because only 14 of its 3,400 students are international. The division is known for innovative programs and academic results, and it promises individual attention in safe communities with modern facilities.
- Students who want a full language environment: those looking for constant use of English in class and at home.
- Families planning their budget carefully: those who want a Canadian public school experience at relatively low tuition.
- Families who want a small community: those who prefer a safe town where teachers know each student by name.
Reasons: what makes the division fit this need
- Low international enrollment: with only 14 international students, a student cannot retreat into a group that shares their first language, so English develops faster.
- Five high school options: five of the division's 20 schools accept international students, so placement is possible in Taber, Vauxhall, Lomond, Milk River and Warner.
- Tuition: the full-year fee is CAD 10,835.60, so the program can be planned on a relatively accessible budget.
- Sports academies: Vauxhall has elite sports academies, baseball above all, so athletes can train and attend classes on the same schedule.
- Fine arts: drama, band, choir and applied arts are offered, giving students outlets beyond academic classes.
- No guardianship fee: no separate guardianship fee is charged, and homestay placement costs CAD 400 per year, which keeps additional costs limited.
- Clear calendar: the application deadlines are June 30 for the September intake and December 1 for the February intake, so families can plan accordingly.

How this fee compares
At CAD 10,835, this fee is CAD 1,265 below the median of CAD 12,100 among 17 public school districts in Alberta.
Outcome: what it means for the student and family
- Rapid language gains: students are surrounded by English at all hours, so language development speeds up naturally, which increases the value of a one-year program.
- Individual monitoring: because the schools are small, teachers can closely follow each student's academic and social adjustment. This matters most for a young person leaving home for the first time.
- Controlled costs: a monthly homestay fee of CAD 975 and annual health insurance of CAD 500 keep the total budget predictable.
- Active school life: school teams in football, volleyball, basketball, rugby and wrestling help students build friendships. The community also offers golf, swimming, skating, hockey and curling.
Who it suits and what to consider
- Suitable profile: independent, sociable students who are open to small-town life. It is not a good fit for those seeking big-city amenities. A student who is willing to make friends on their own initiative adjusts much more easily.
- Transport: the nearest airport is Calgary International Airport. Arrival arrangements should be confirmed with the division when applying. Programs longer than six months require a Study Permit, which IRCC decides on. Visa processing time should be taken into account ahead of the application deadlines.
- Additional costs: an application fee of CAD 200 applies, plus a CAD 250 transcript verification fee for a full year. The current fees should be confirmed with the school before applying.
