Blyth Academy

Toronto, Ontario

Blyth Academy has been teaching on small-class campuses in Ontario since 1977. It accepts international students from Grade 4 to Grade 12. It offers a four-term calendar, online ESL support and homestay accommodation through partner organizations.

Need

Why Blyth Academy?

Some students struggle to follow eight courses at the same time, and their families look for a system that divides courses into smaller blocks.

  • Focused learning: Concentrating on fewer courses at a time helps students who prefer this model achieve better results.
  • Choice of city: Families can choose among campuses in Toronto, Mississauga, Burlington and Ottawa.
  • Personal attention: The small-campus structure appeals to students who worry about getting lost in a large school.
Reasons

Reasons: features that set Blyth Academy apart

The information the school publishes for international students explains this model through the following features:

  • Four-term calendar: The terms run September–November, November–January, January–April and April–June. Fewer courses are taken each term, and there are several starting points during the year.
  • 12: 1 student-teacher ratio: Teachers can give more time to students whose English is still developing.
  • OSSD and pathway planning: The school grants the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and supports university planning. Courses are chosen according to the target field of study.
  • ESL support: ESL levels 1–5 are offered virtually and through one-to-one tutoring.
  • Flexible language requirement: There is no mandatory minimum language score, but applicants are expected to demonstrate proficiency. Students at different levels are considered.
  • Established institution: The school has operated since 1977 and has hosted students from more than 25 countries.

Result

Outcome: what it means for the student and family

This structure means the following for students and families:

  • Manageable course load: Because few courses are taken per term, a newly arrived student adapts more easily to the language and to the way classes work in Canada.
  • Campus flexibility: Families can choose a campus by city, neighbourhood, and academic or athletic program preference.
  • University preparation: The school recommends reaching IELTS 6.0–6.5 by Grade 12, a target in line with university language requirements.
  • Mid-year start: A student who misses September can start during the year thanks to the four-term calendar.

Who it suits and what to consider

  • Who it suits: Students who like working in small classes with concentrated terms and who can adapt to living with a host family.
  • Accommodation: The school has no residence. Accommodation is arranged and charged separately through independent organizations such as Canada Homestay Network and MLI Homestay.
  • Costs: The published information is for 2025–26 and varies by campus. The application fee is CAD 250. Current fees should be confirmed with the school before applying.

Practical notes

Within Toronto there are campuses at Downsview Park and Lawrence Park; in the Greater Toronto Area at Mississauga and Burlington; and in the capital, Ottawa, at The Glebe. A Study Permit is required for studies longer than six months, and IRCC makes the decision. Students under 17 who arrive without a parent must have a custodian appointed in Canada. High school study is exempt from the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) requirement.
